Point of Contact is an exhibition of work by Agnese Cebere and Erin Langley. Through photography and sculpture, they explore themes of landscape and terrain, surface and depth. Situated within the high desert landscapes regional to Bend, Cebere and Langley eschew romantic depictions of this familiar terrain and instead cast their gaze downward: at abandoned campsites, makeshift fire pits, and household refuse. Through image-making and material processes, Point of Contact asks the audience to reconsider their own position in the land in which they live. The exhibition includes photographs by Cebere, all part of the series Desert Shots, taken near Redmond, OR. These images are the product of an investigation of a liminal site of recreation that is also a site of illegal dumping of waste and detritus. Part forensic investigation, part aesthetic intervention, this work underscores the way nature and culture are intertwined in our everyday lives. Langley’s sculptures take as their starting point the notion of the consumer remnant— a cast-off object or material (a scrap of junkmail, a weathered piece of plastic) whose color, shape, or texture provokes an artistic response. The completed sculptures are de-idealized, pseudo-geologic forms that interrogate the perceived division between natural and synthetic, while nodding to the materials and structures in Cebere’s photos. Point of Contact considers surface as both an entry point and final resting place. Through Langley’s active relation between herself and surrounding waste, the overlooked is leveraged to gain new purchase on a smooth, habitual world. Equally, Cebere employs artifice as a revealer of form. The texture of the accumulated surfaces of Langley’s work stands in apparent contrast to the high gloss of Cebere’s photographs. Yet, as objects, both beckon and obscure through shine and iridescence, relying on an in-person experience to access their indeterminacy. What has always been there shimmers anew.

Book Launch Event: What Happened to the McCrays by Tracey Lange
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Book Launch Event: What Happened to the McCrays by Tracey Lange Roundabout Books, 900 NW Mt Washington Dr, Bend, OR, 97703, United States Tickets for this event are $5 general admission or book purchase.
From New York Times bestselling author Tracey Lange, a poignant story about the resilience of family, the importance of community, and the magic of middle school hockey.
When Kyle McCray gets word his father has suffered a debilitating stroke, he returns to his hometown of Potsdam, New York, where he doesn’t expect a warm welcome. Kyle left suddenly two and a half years ago, abandoning people who depended on him: his father, his employees, his friends—not to mention Casey, his wife of sixteen years and a beloved teacher in town. He plans to lie low and help his dad recuperate until he can leave again, especially after Casey makes it clear she wants him gone.
The longer he’s home, the more Kyle understands the impact his departure has had on the people he left behind. When he’s presented with an opportunity for redemption as the coach of the floundering middle school hockey team, he begins to find compassion in unexpected places. Kyle even considers staying in Potsdam, but that’s only possible if he and Casey can come to some kind of peace with each other.
Full of love and hope, What Happened to the McCrays? takes an intimate look at both sides of a failed marriage and two people who must finally confront the awful pain of their past or risk being consumed by it.
Tracey Lange was born and raised in New York City. She graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in psychology before owning and operating a behavioral healthcare company with her husband for fifteen years. She completed the Stanford University online novel writing program, and is the author of We Are the Brennans and The Connellys of County Down. She currently lives in Bend, Oregon with her husband, two sons, and beloved German Shepherd.
Kerry Chaput is an award-winning historical fiction author who believes in the power of stories that highlight young women and found families. Her debut, Daughter of the King, continues to place as a best-seller in Historical French Fiction. The sequel, Daughter of the Shadows, published in March 2023. Born and raised in California, she now lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where she can be found on hiking trails and in coffee shops.

Rails Across the High Desert: The Epic Race to Central OR
10:00 am – 11:30 am Rails Across the High Desert: The Epic Race to Central OR Downtown Bend Library, 601 NW Wall Street, Bend, OR, 97701, United States Local historian Jim Carroll explores the complexities of early Central Oregon railroads
During this presentation local historian Jim Carroll explores the complexities surrounding the construction of two railroads and the competition to reach Central Oregon. Central Oregon lacked railroad service until 1911, relying on horse-drawn wagons from Shaniko, Wasco County, situated 80 miles away. The region saw the final railway showdown between rival railroad magnates, James Hill and Edward Harriman. The two major Northwest railroads, the Great Northern and the Union Pacific, battled their way up both sides of the Deschutes River from the Columbia River, aiming to tap into Central Oregon’s bustling trade in timber, wool, livestock, and agricultural supplies. Completing the 100-mile stretch in under two years was a remarkable feat, perhaps impossible to replicate today.
Jim Carroll relocated to Central Oregon in 1977 following college, initially entering the wood industry before transitioning to agriculture, where he served as an agronomist for four decades. Throughout his career, Jim maintained an interest in history, particularly local history. He played a pivotal role as president of the Jefferson County Museum and was instrumental in merging the museum group with the Jefferson County Historical Society to form one organization. Later he served as president of the Jefferson County Historical Society and continues to contribute as a board member.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Oregon (OLLI-UO) in Central Oregon invites community members to participate in our Friday Talks in partnership with the Deschutes Public Library. OLLI-UO is an intellectual and social community of engaged adult learners, connecting members to university faculty and professionals in respective fields. A six-month or yearlong membership allows participation in a variety of lectures, courses, peer-led study and discussion groups, educational tours, field trips, and social events.
