For the birds: An OSU student collects data on collisions with buildings

Last April, Oregon State University student Jayshaun Talbert got a message from a friend alerting him to an animal medical emergency: A distressed hawk had flown beak-first into a window at the Marketplace West Dining Hall on campus. It was around 7 p.m., Talbert recalled, and upon arriving at the scene, he learned the stunned animal — a Cooper’s hawk, he thinks — had repeatedly attempted to fly from the commotion it had stirred from students and some mean-spirited crows, only to, sadly, slam into yet another window.
